A big knife kept for hunting only shows an intent to hunt, if you grabbed it to use in a situation where you thought that your life was in danger then that's OK but you mustn't have it with the intention to use it for self defence.
Strictly interpreting the law; if a farmer goes out to hunt pigs or scrub bulls and repairs a few fences then that is lawful but if he goes out to repair fences and takes a gun with him to defend himself against said pigs and bulls then he is committing an offence.
