You remember the fire mission procedures a lot better than I do.....
If we didn't want to wait for ARVN and GVN (civilian) clearance for a fire mission, would have
someone stand back and fire M-16 in air and say we were in contact. Of course we always
got US clearance.

After further thought, I think maybe I had that battery notice of shot out wrong. Maybe they did say "Shot, over" and the FO said "Shot , out". And then, if you asked for splash they would give you a "splash, over". Crap... that was nearly a half century ago and I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday so surprised I remember as much as I actually do about way back then.
