Huey's we rode we were sitting on the side. Couldn't fall out the back. Centrifugal force kept us in as the choppers banked always while going forward. However, once I remember sitting on the floor with the legs dangling and suddenly the chopper motor cut out and the Huey took a steep diving turn and all I was seeing was sky. Then it banked the other way and all I was seeing was ground. With little bank and no motor the centrifugal force wasn't there and there was much more drop than arc in the turn. My butt was sliding into the breeze. Lucky... I grabbed the struts that were holding the bench seat up and kept from going out. The motor suddenly started again and the chopper leveled off not far off the ground. Scared the bejesus out of me and I remember it vividly down to today. What happened was the pilot was flying into the insertion that arty was prepping and he only belatedly got the air data warning and was about to fly into the path of the arching howitzer rounds.
I happen to have a photo I took, probably accidentally, seated on the floor of a Huey.
