Hi!

A german SVT rifle shooter with an question:
I saw your great photos. You use the same mountbase than me (ok, i´m new, i have never shot with it, because i still need a scope for).

I bought the base here in germany with missing "security pin".

On your photos it is missing, too (ok, in photo without mounted on the SVT it is there.

I did not check the whole thing.
Is it possible to shoot without this pin? The mount fits quite good, and im wondering if it is really needed.

Can you please explain me, what the pin does? I can see not an function.

2nd) There a button whitch can be pressed from inside. But if i tighten the screw on the top, it is fixed. I did not understand the working or the sense of this button, too.

I´m confused, and it would be very cool, to get some informations. I can not find anything in the www about it.

And maybe a good photo of the pin would be good to see. Maybe its possible to build one...

Or, where can i buy such pins?

The security pin that you speak of is actually a push button that allows the mechanism to engage & lock into a notch found only on true sniper variants of the SVT40 rifles.
The notch is found at the top rear of the receiver just behind the action cover.
Either Drakes rifle does not have this notch or Drake does not want to scratch & wear the bluing from his SVT40 rifle.
That is why you see the security pin missing from the mounted photos & installed on the stand-alone photos.
There are current reproduction SVT40 sniper scopes & mounts coming out of Czech Republic & possibly Ukraine that are very good.
If you have a SVT40 without the sniper notch, cutting a notch in your non-sniper SVT40 will cause the rifle to lose value upon resale to a collector, as this modification was done by a collector.
Most SVT40 rifles that I have fired are not accurate. They are too lightweight for the powerful round & the old stocks do not fit snug anymore.
They sure do tame the recoil of the 54r round though!

As oldironsights stated, the pin is used to retain the mount to the rifle. A notch is machined at the top rear edge of the receiver for this purpose.

My rifle lacks the notch and I'm not willing to cut it as it's one of the easiest ways to reduce your rifle's value. The pin is not exactly necessary for shooting, however. The mount is such a snug fit I need a mallet to install and remove it from the rifle. I've noticed the mount tends to take one or two rounds to 'seat', after which it groups better. Since I don't notice this phenomenon with iron sights the best explanation I can offer is the mount base slides forward slightly as the recoil impulse moves the receiver underneath it.

Also as stated, SVT's aren't tack-drivers. My M91-30 shoots truer, but it's not quite like firing a 2" snubbie at 50 yards. I bedded my SVT's stock as a preventative measure to keep the wrist from cracking - the receiver had a bit of fore-aft movement beforehand. I should also mention it is very important to fully tighten the gas piston! If you do not, you'll notice your groups starting to get larger and larger as you keep shooting.

About the screw on top and the button: This is how you adjust the mount's fit on your rifle. When you turn the screw here-

By doing this it allows the mount to seat further forward on the rifle - to line up with the milled notch (if your rifle has one!). Ideally you adjust the screw so you can slide the mount all the way forward and hit a bit of resistance as you compress the bumper to install the crosspin. My mount fits so darn tight that I can't even notice it. If you're going to shoot without the crosspin slot, I would tighten the screw fully to compress the bumper, push the mount all the way forward so the bumper isn't trying to work the mount off the rear of the rifle.

I haven't done this extensively yet, but I've put about 100-150 rounds through it with the scope mount installed like this. This seems to be the consensus I've found on other forums - it's better to fit the mount on with a mallet than to mill a slot in the rifle and forever mar it.

Here in Germany a SVT is about 300 USD. So maybe i will drill in a notch. But before i have to look, where i can make such "pin". I work nearby an Sheet metal processing. So maybe its possible for them. Thanks for the photos again.

I don't know a great deal about German gun laws - you can only own self-loaders if they have optics installed?

Drake...here in Germany it is not easy to have the permission to buy a gun. Specially not an pistol/revolver or an Semi-Automatic-Rifle.

You have to be 1 Year in a shotting club, make 18 Trainings per Year and after that you have to make an examination about weppons handling. Buying a safe to store ist, and for every gun (max. 2-3 SAR) you have to make an request WHY you need it. Means: Searching for a discipline, where you have to own THAT gun.

So i have an German G3 vor shoting disciplin with Scope 12X, an Arsenal AK-Clon vor ironsight discipline and the SVT for Ordonance discipline with 4 X scope.
Thats the deal here
You have to make 1 competition each year, otherwise your guns are gone

BTW: If you drive a little drunked with you car -> Guns are gone

Shooting in garden, like you...haha......maybe better not to think about.

And about "modifying the weapon". Until 2003 here in germany was fobidden to own a gun with muzzle break, holes for cooling the barrel, and magazines.
So look, how SVT weappons loke like before 2003. Castratet. So its not a big problem here to modify one with the notch.

Dont cry by looking on the picture. But such SVTs are avaiable in tons here in Germany. About 100 USD.
Normal uncut SVTs about 300 as i wrote.

Hi! Me again!

I have finally installed my Accumount-Scope with the base (without pin). It fits strong, does not move while shooting.

But next problem:

I am not able to go with the "crosshair" where my shot goes. It is much to far down and left. How can i fix the problem? No "big" adjustements possible at the scope? And the mountbase is fix, too.

Hi, I´m Eric from the Netherlands (living in Germany though ) and I´m new here in this forum. Bought myself an SVT40 a few months ago (1943). I am still waiting for my scope, they seem to be pretty difficult to become in Germany. Mounts are pretty easy to get (about 170-190 Euros a piece). My gun dealer will get scopes from russia by the end of the month. Cannot wait
