Re: New Nepal 1853 adventure
Ordered a main spring and sear spring from a Civil War re-enactor merchant, Winchester Sutler. With postage the total cost will be $18.50. Hope I can make the parts fit.
Didn't do much today to it. Did put the butt plate on. It took some file work because it was a bit larger than the space it needed to fit to and extended on the foot and on one side about an eighth of an inch. Also replaced one of the barrel band springs. The part looked old and must have come from the Nepal cache. The pin that goes through the stock was longer than needed, but I just plugged in the dremel and cut off the excess.
I filled in a hole in the stock at the end of the lock plate with some wood filler and will have to work on getting the color right.
I checked what tung oil would do to the stock and it was absorbed like a sponge as you can imagine. It did look a lot like a walnut stock finish after it soaked in a bit, although what the actual wood is I'm not sure.

So...what's that got to do with this string anyway?
Re: New Nepal 1853 adventure
I suggested that you use an ATF and Acetone mix as a penetrating oil to help with your restoration of the rifle Robert.

My memory span is pretty short, should have gone back and reread the previous page.

Got the nipple loose. Just took soaking in reel scrub for a couple of days. Also cleaned the bore with soap and water...pumped soapy water through it. After a few dry patches used some patches with oil. They came out rust mud brown for a while. But I think the bore, in so far as I can see, is still in pretty good shape.
Re: New Nepal 1853 adventure
I got the mainspring and the sear spring in the mail from Winchester Sutler yesterday. Today I started the part of the refurb I dreaded most. I put the mainspring and the sear in place and it seems to work. The hardest part was making do without a mainspring clamp. But, although it would have been nice to have a third hand, I managed with some vice grips and a pair of pliers.
I did have the advantage of my reproduction Enfield to check against the Nepal lock.
The parts proved to be good fit as they came to me, with only some light file work on the mainspring.
Now it should all be down hill......famous last words.....I know.
