MY COMMENTS ON SUBMISSIONS FOR THE FIRST PHOTO CONTEST.
In Order of posting, including those not eligible to win.
1) Reenactment - Niner.
This has all the best of a photograph, interest where ever you look and a feeling of life top it. It is always a good thing to look at cropping (cutting out) areas that do nothing for the picture. Most cameras that are not SLR/DSLR, where your viewfinder does not look through the lens will give you a larger image than you see through the viewfinder. Using computer software crop out the bits that don't contribute to the image like vegetation, lots of sky or foreground. I like this shot.
2) Brancpeth Castle - dhtaxi.
It's a Christmas Card type shot but has nothing to do with the theme unless you read the text. This being a photographic competition the title should say it all but it doesn't fit the theme for me.
3) Brrr! - dhtaxi.
Much more like it. A feeling of Trenches, Winter in the Ardennes, Italy and Korea. Fits the bill very well I think. I would have removed the modern paraphernalia though to give it an even better feel of the past but as I suspect it wasn't taken specifically for the competition I understand why it is there. Try a sepia tone too......................
4) Enfields - Woftam.
Well, it's different but lets be honest - a photo that has been changed with maybe one or two clicks of the mouse, doesn't stand alongside some others. I KNOW, just a fill in but I said I would comment on all of em!
5) Revolver 1 - Joseyclosey.
Well framed and the light makes it feel old, which it is! It is a good study using the cases and not including lots of background. Plenty of detail in the image too.
6) Revolver 2 - Joseclosey.
Not as good as the first one. Too much background distracting from the main image and the angle of the weapon confuses the viewer who wants to know the make etc.,
7) Unfortunately the image posted by Karl cannot be included in the contest because he didn't use the forum photo posting system as stipulated in the rules! I would however say that it is an interesting image that needs more work to it. Straighten the background, create more detail in the model, crop the bright part of the floor area in the foreground and then sepia tone it to give it an old feel. I worked on it a bit with the following result.
REMEMBER, with digital you can try all sorts of things and save them as different file numbers. Be adventurous, it only costs time!!
So! the final results voted for by the judging panel of Myself, Niner and Woftam
1st Brrr! by Dave.
Joint 2nd & 3rd Revolver 1 & 2 by Joe.
I will leave Niner to reveal the prize Dave so well done.
