Here is one the other end of the light problem from Duncan's last. I was interested in the sun on the water and the dazzling light reflection against the moving waves. I wanted the pier in the backgound to counterpoint as a geometric structural form. I knew if the camera was pointing into the sun that it would hit the lense and screw up the photo. So... I took off my cap and used the brim as a shade for the camera. Worked out ok...I think.

That's not what I wanted to show. The experience of the sun on the waves was important. However, if I had just used the original size image and did a crop from a small section of it, it would look a lot like your photoshop.
I was using a Pentax Optio 20 because that's my boat camera. It is water proof and fits in a pocket. You have to also take into account I was in a small boat and there was some movement of the boat from the wave action as well. I was attempting to get the camera as horizontal and as still at the moment I took the picture as I intentionally could under the circumstances.
The original size one is 2300 pixels the longest way. The one I first posted, back a few posts, was downsized to 1000 pixels width before uploading so probably lost a little detail.
