The bottles are actually British beer bottles - Red Bass.

I thought the meaningless part was the obvious propaganda value done with no regard to how phony and made up the scene obviously is. The rifle is not only pointing at the Tommy's head but nobody would have leaned it against a box like that even if there were no people around what it is leaning on.

Good spot on the ball that was added probably by whomever colorized the photo.

And note that the Tommy on the left seems to be keeping the rifle in position with his boot.
