Welcome to these board Fletch and thanks for the post, apologies for taking so long to get to your post but I'm away a lot just now.
I do agree Fletch, the choice is hard and not really representative.
I remember one of my first posts here when we were an Ezboard site to niners original poll was whatever Enfield I happen to be shooting.
I have a soft spot for my Lee Speed also, I look forward to its twice a year outing at the Running Deer.

I checked the No.4 box, as I prefer my '44 Long Branch probably the most. I'm a big SMLE fan though. I have a nice new '55 Faz No.4Mk2 that I haven't shot yet...might be my fave after I get to know it.

:oops:Well I'm embarassed to admit that I've never fired an Enfield. But I've experienced a great desire to own and fire one. So I've been doing a lot of reading and and hunting for one and was very surprised to find out just how many variations of this fine weapon there are. A collector could spend his whole life trying to get a fine speciman of every variation of this gun. The prices vary as much as the guns do. From what I've read, I think I'm leaning toward the No. 4
I've notice some of the ones I've looked at have fairly loose wood. Is this normal for these guys? The hand guards seem excessivly loose.
Thanks! Bill
Good Choice

A No. 4 would be a good choice as a first Enfield. And no.. the hand guard shouldn't feel loose, nor should any other of the wood. A slight adjustment of a barrel band may be all that's the matter with a handguard though. .

enfield,s kind of grow on you,...and particularily black powder ones.
as for photos...i have to learn how to post em first
as for shooting these things, i usualy take 100 rounds snider and 30 rounds martini and two or three tylenol tablets with me, ,theres quite a thud when you fire full l.o.c. loads
as for accuracy...i,m getting there...copilot

I ticked SMLE for my alltime favourite. First handled one as a six y/o while hospitalized with a digger in 1941 and then later as a cadet, on through N/S then CMF till 1959. But eyesight has limited me to a NIW (94) #4 mk2, somehow I don't feel disadvantaged.
