I have visited Verdun and it is a sorrowful place. L'ossuaire de Douaumont, which contains the bones of over 130,000 soldiers and the cemetery in front of it which contains 1,642 graves is a sobering sight to behold.
The battle produced casualties of around 700,000 men of which some 230,000 men lost their lives.
The battle lasted for 300 days; 21 February 1916 – 19 December 1916

Meanwhile back at the ranch. The US goes after Poncho ...and never caught him.
The US was using air power to search for the enemy for the first time. Too bad they didn't have any of those drones carrying bombs. That might have fixed him...or killed a few peons herding cattle.

The Foggy Dew. The Irish Easter Rising was a hundred years ago. In today's news an Irish Jesuit said the rising was un-Catholic....hard to believe. My grandfather, on my Mother's side, had a shalaylee and was proud of being Irish. He was in America at the time of the rebellion although born there in all likelihood. I never knew what he thought about it.

Seems like the rich, particularly Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt, feel a certain need to assist the Royals in Europe during the continuing unpleasantness. Just to keep the riffraff out only contributions of $10,000 are accepted. That's about $217,000 in today's money.
