Thanks Robert, it shoots good too. 65gns by volume TPPH BP under an RCBS Minnie cast from pure lead with a Beeswax/Tallow/Lanolin lube and a clay plug works good for me out to 300 yrds.

For longer distances more powder and a stiffer alloy to avoid skirt deformation as the pressure climbs.

Is yours a Euroarms?

Mine came through Bass Pro Shops in 1995. I have it written down as being imported through Traditions. It does have the Italian proof marks but can't say who actually made it. The stock is well finished and has a nice grain to it.

Never used a clay plug. Just what does that do for your load?

I get slightly better groups with the plug Robert than without.

I don't think its necessary for expansion, my view is it that it helps maintain the integrity of the skirt when I seat the bullet on top of the powder and helps it expand evenly with the ramming. I also think that it helps compress the powder a bit more evenly as well when seating.

Thats what I think it does but have no proof other than it shoots a tad better with the plug, other than that my views are speculative.

As you know I always like to develop my views from a position of uninformed ignorance.

Adam, seems like a good theory to me..... both of them. Where do you get the clay plugs from? How thick are they?

US Civil War soldiers didn't have such things as clay plugs .....I don't think. But of course they were only trying to kill each other and marksmanship in general was really secondary.

I make the plugs Robert.

I use fine ceramic clay because living with an artist theres plenty of that around but epoxy works as well.

I roll it out to around 1/4" thick them cut the plugs out with the bullet I'm using, I have one of all the HB bullets I use drilled through the nose into the cavity to take a short length of 1/4" dowel which I use to push the plugs out with. They are then left to dry or hurried along in the oven and are ready for loading.

No ceramic clay around my house to experiment with, but what would a thick felt wad do?

You worked in the car industry Robert, surely you can come by some body putty.

Works just as good.
