Well, 3½ years since this post dried up but it's quite amazing what comes into your life from nowhere 
Three days ago a teacher who is involved in the Frankton Souvenire Society (Cockleshell Heroes) came round to see if there was any information in some magazines that my Mother has saved over the years from the Second World War Experience in Leeds .http://www.war-experience.org/
I have some photographs that I have taken at various ceremonies and I asked her if she would like copies.
She said yeas and so I put all the information on a CD and she called to collect it yesterday.
After a brief talk about the Frankton Raid and the aftermath she said that she was born in the Vendee and her family had been involved in the Resistance there.
I mentioned than my No:4 was part of an arms drop in 1944 and after a while it transpired that her cousin was responsible for the safety of the units arms which were possibly dropped and stored in the area I was told about when I bought the rifle...............................Watch this space

Well, a bit more info to put on the table of the jigsaw!
The supposed drop zone on the map I have was not a drop zone BUT there were 3 in the area, the main one being near Bouin near to the Ile Noirmutier.
There were various arms caches in that area, many found by the Germans and French police through informants. The people caught hiding arms were sent to Auschwitz.
Because of this problem my friends cousin went out and secretly, without telling anyone, moved various caches to a a place called Apremont before they could fall in to enemy hands. It is possible that the rifle is from these arms.
The details I gave her are presently with her family in the area so I hope for more detailed information later on.

Hey..........I know that area relatively well.
Been in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and visited the Ile Noirmoutier last year.
Like A square 10 I keep coming back here.
