Your photo.....as you originally linked it looks like this on my computer.....with no bar at the bottom to scroll right. Now.... browers can vary in what they will show I'd imagine.

Your resolution is higher than mine, and my resolution is higher than that of 70% of the people on the internet.
Check with Google Browser Size:

Robert and Duncan,
My screen resolution is set at what Windows recommends, 1600 X 900. What are yours set at?
After looking at both of your screen shots, on the lower right task bar, both of you have so many programs running in the background that it would seem to slow down your computers. Or not.
Just seems like a lot.

Mine's 1280 by whatever. What makes you think I have a lot of programs running? The computer isn't running all the programs on the task bar at the same time......I don't think.

The way I understand it, and I may be wrong, is that those programs that show on the lower right are all running in the background using various amounts of resources.
Most set themselves up to start automatically in the Start Menu when you install them.
To see what programs are started each time you start your computer, type in "msconfig" (without quotes) into Run or where ever you search for programs, depends on operating system.
Then click on the "Startup" tab, all the checked programs start when you start your computer.
The only programs that automatically start on my computer are my security and mouse programs, and I could probably turn off the mouse and it will still work.
However, this is how I set up my computer and I'm not suggesting you turn off all your progams. I'm only saying that is how to find out what you have running all the time.
Most of those programs don't need to start until you need them, like printers, Adobe Reader, photo editing, Quicktime, and so on. These programs will start when you need them and don't need to run all the time.
Check with your son, he's the one that really knows this stuff.
Vern.

Whatever is happening Vern, my computer works just fine. Those things in my task bar are the kinds of things you mention like printers and photo programs and if they are doing anything when I'm not using them it doesn't seem to hurt anything..

You are correct, them running hurts nothing.
My problem goes back to the old days of building computers, when I couldn't wait to get a 1.5gig hard drive or 128megs of RAM. Every little thing running would slow down your computer.
Now days I have 500gig hard drive and 4gigs of RAM and I'm still afraid of things slowing down my computer, guess I need to work on getting over it.

Vern. My screen res is 1920 X 1200. At 4Gb of RAM my system works fine with those running. I was led to believe that full progrtammes on the Desktop rather than short cuts was the biggest drain on RAM.
