How about this cheery bit of news. Up to the minute information about Australian troops to keep families informed. Well... maybe not so cheery after all. But wealthy Australian volunteers seem to enjoy it.

The famous Zimmerman cable to Mexico breaks into the public spotlight when published in the newspapers. Zimmerman, a German diplomat, sent German diplomats in Mexico a cable that was encrypted that gave instructions as to what they should propose to the Mexican government. The British spy network intercepted it and was able to break the code and passed it on to the Wilson administration.

The US had been in a small police action with various factions in Mexico that was just winding down.

The first female Congress woman. And....she turned out to be a pacifist when the war vote came. Looks a little like the wicked witch of the West ...doesn't she...from the Wizard of Oz? Nancy Pelosi comes to mind also. But.. she couldn't have been that much of a bitch....could she?

She does resemble the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton), although Hamilton wore a fake
chin and nose for the movie.......
She did a great job of scaring generations of children......

It was tougher in those days. No emails to hack or multiple false news agents. Just the regular newspaper jingo press.

The US is about to declare war and the Entente was feeling pretty good about how things were going for the home team...and then this little problem. The Russian Monarch.... Nick the deuce.... finds himself deposed and on the way to eventual murder....along with his whole family. But the Russians that now seem to be at the top still hate the Germans more than the Czar did.... says the US news. No problem... right? British papers think it's just great.
