Teddy is ready. He was born that way. He announced he was ready to gather his two divisions of mostly non draftable volunteers and was ready to assemble them and get over to France after 30 days and do a little training there before rushing off to the firing line. But...he would find that Wilson wasn't having any citizen army and wasn't donating any senior officers to direct it. Wilson was at least playing with a full deck. The US isn't medieval with war lords gathering their own armies was Wilson's view. And... Roosevelt.. pride injured... accepted the President's decision... perhaps not altogether gracefully, but well enough.

How about this for ..... being insensitive to ethnic value? If it happened today this would be on the world news tonight for a form of ethnic slavery.

Meanwhile... France and Italy send delegates to the US to make a tour, address Congress, whip up war fever, collect 100's of millions of dollars....and get the ticker tape parade in New York. America is getting enthusiastic.

Marshall Joffre of France is given the hero treatment in the press and by the crowds.

Wilson at a dedication to a memorial to Red Cross nurses made a speech. Wishful thinking at best. In reality only sugar coating a turd of which America was about to take a big bite out of.

Get the war hysteria up! Now that we have picked sides it's onward to Victory!

War is fun....until somebody kin to you is killed in it. But...with a little luck maybe they will send his body home...if it's all in one piece and somebody can identify it. Or.... if you are a young healthy man, come on down and enlist... there's glory enough for everyone coming in the very near future. America can't wait to start the killing.

Even after Congressional approval, Wilson turns down Teddy's quite substantial volunteer Army. And although during the Civil War such volunteer outfits were raised both North and South by prominent men... in generally regiment or company size units, in this war the free lance military organizers were out of business for what has turned out to be looking like forever. Wilson wasn't having any of it and today, a hundred years ago, the axe fell on Teddy and his plans.

Time to register for the draft. Note the questions. None seem to want to know if the registered has all of his appendages and is sighted or how much education he has or if he has ever done time for a crime. But....if you aren't native born they want to know the particulars....and if you are a Negro... tear off a corner of the page. And notice...in those days they weren't prejudice against homosexuals..... in the draft information request at least.

Lots of space for job and employer and small space to "specify grounds" for draft exemption.......
Obviously they don't want to hear about why you don't want to be drafted......
