When the US committed itself to WWI the largest foreign language speaking segment of the US was made up of Germans. There were hundreds of German language newspapers and hundreds of thousands of first and second generation Germans in America who remained fluent in their mother tongue. They were, for the most part, loyal Americans. But they were fast becoming suspect as enemies of the state. By the end of WWI many German language newspapers had gone out of business.

Looking good for the allies with the US now on their side. But... the Russian revolution is hitting a snag. To start with all was lovely and the Russians were looking stable and willing to continue the war. But... the natives are getting restless.

It's sign up for the draft day. Thousands do so in every city.... However... say what? This doesn't make a lot of sense.

Previous day's designated draft registration day estimates. Note government estimate of draftee potential that would register in one column and estimate of how many registered in the next.

An idea that probably didn't get much traction in Britain.

US is serious. It expects the new mass of draftees to shoot a lot of bullets judging by the ammo order. You'd think the bullets would be cheaper by ordering 320 million rounds. Maybe they were gold plated.
