Americans work on loving austerity as their new patriotic duty...even if there isn't much sense in it. Booze of all sorts is to be limited or..better... banned to save on grain to share with the allies and to keep soldiers and war workers sober. People are encouraged to tighten their grocery budget and house wives, which include a majority of grown women of the day, are invited to join clubs devoted to finding ways to be thrifty and cut down on food purchases and other household replenishable goods. And .. everybody... including those making just enough to keep their heads above water... are to buy war bonds...probably with the money the wives save starving the family.

If my high school math serves me correctly, that is .3125¢ per round. That doesn't seem to be
much of a bargain considering the prices of 100 years ago. I just checked current prices and the going rate
for new brass case 30.06 is about 65¢ per round, and that's only ordering a few hundred, not 320 million......
Wonder how Winchester justified that price? According to a currency inflation calculator site, if one round cost 31¢ in
1917, it would cost $5.92 today. You can buy 50cal BMG for less than $2.50 a round...........
If you reverse the inflation rate, a 65¢ round today should cost 3¢ in 1917....

Vern, I was thinking the same thing. I guess the government hasn't changed much in squandering money. But...wonder if that was a misprint?

Say what? We are going to be killing the crap out of them and they are going to be doing the same to us and yet....somebody came up with this bright idea for captured officers. Note that this notion is for officers only. Screw the enlisted men...most of them are only draftees anyway.

German outrages are more than a civilized nation....like France.. can imagine. The horror of the atrocities they quickly report to the US newspapers for local consumption are dramatic and always include names of the victims. And America isn't the least bit skeptical of stories that give victims names.

This seemed like a good way to communicate at the time. The problem would be in getting out of the trench and not getting shot I'd think. And of course the messages would have to be sent in code because if the friendly troops could see the hand waving so could the unfriendly ones..

Probably worked fine...one ship to the other. And Marines are a part of the Navy. I wasn't thinking that when I posted this yesterday. And on a ship they would probably use flags.
