This rifle had a Cut Off fitted. It had been broken off but the piece with the screw hole was still attached.
Many SMLE's not only had the cut off retained but they also had the Volley Sights removed........

You inspired me to take out some Enfield photos in respect to the cut off. A 1904 example has the cut off in place. A 1919 model, Lithgow, has the cut off slot still visible in the probably original stock but cut of removed. A third shows a 1914 example with the cut off removed....but in a stock that covers the cut off slot.

The rifle had a butt extension fitted when it arrived and it was loose. It was obviously an old fitting and I decided to remove it and re fit it properly.
It was attached with 2 steel woodscrews, partially rusted into the wood.

Having removed it I decided to check it against my No.I Mk.III* and it looks as though the original butt has not been changed lengthwise.

So rather than re fit the extension I propose to just fit a proper butt plate which I think looks like a No.3.

Having looked over the web for a while I found one similar on ebay so have bought it to 'fill the gap' till I can find the real one.

I also received some bullets today which should add to the accuracy - even when I am shooting it!!
