Yours looks like Savannah - the 1st (and only) nuclear-powered commercial ship. Tom, that looks like a K-class sub, the one that proved that steam and underwater didn't really go well together... They were fast though.

Surcouf (N N 3) was a French submarine ordered to be built in December 1927, launched on 18 October 1929, and commissioned in May 1934. Surcouf—named after the French privateer Robert Surcouf—was the largest submarine ever built until surpassed by the Japanese I-400s. Her short wartime career was marked with controversy and conspiracy theories. She was classified as an "undersea cruiser" by sources of her time.

A brilliant idea, if it had worked out properly, just imagine coming to the surface and ripping in a couple of shells or two.

NS Savannah was the first, but not the only nuclear merchant ship built, there were 4.

NS Mutsu, Japan, 1970–1992. It never carried any commercial cargo.
NS Otto Hahn, Germany, 1968–1979 (re-powered with diesel engine in 1979)
NS Savannah, United States, 1962–1972
NS Sevmorput, Russia (former Soviet Union), 1988– (still in operation).

Hi Guys,

Yes, the submarine was a K-Boat - Steam powered and with a dive time so long that a member of the Engineering team would walk on the deck, stamping on the air inlets to ensure that they were closed.

I was actually trying to find a picture of K-13, she sank twice, once on trials after which she was salvaged, reconditioned and re-named K-22, in which guise she was sunk again, this time permanently.

One member of both crews (Oscar Moth?), having been rescued after the second sinking applied for a return to surface work on the grounds that K-Boats had tried to kill him twice and he was damned if he'd give them a third chance.

Re: Sercouf: She wasn't the first submarine with big guns, she was certainly preceeded by M1 - officially a "Submarine Monitor" - unofficially a re-engined K-Boat with a 'big-gun' turret (12" ?)
M2 was even sillier, a submarine aircraft carrier! (IIRC)
