A hundred years ago today in WWI, there was heavy fighting in the Flanders region that encompasses the region that connects Northern France to Belgium. This was a continuing area of heavy fighting during the entire war. Here is one group of headlines on today's date in the Ogden Standard a hundred years ago.

Maybe I didn't notice where it was explained but ...what's going to happen to those 800,000 plus ceramic poppies when the centennial of WWI is over? Maybe put them away for another two decades and fill the moat up again for WWII?

Something about this glorification of war dead makes war too easy. And we mock the Muslim terrorist theory that each dead terrorist gets more virgins than he can expect to service in the next life. And I'm looking at the US in particular. We are still doing the National Anthem at the start of a World Series game, as is traditional, as in which ever side wins we are all Americans and don't take it too seriously in the spirit of sportsmanship, and then, now, in the 7th inning, we are doing the God Bless America to "honor" our military. Or is it more to give our perpetual war footing a pat on the back?

The Poppies will be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion to continue their work with the Armed Forces charitable needs.

I don't agree that it is a glorification of war - it is a remembrance of those who died and those who were left to continue their lives without the support of their loved ones.

Well....if they are going to auction them off and do some good with the money for those who have served..that's a horse of a different color.

I understand they have all been sold already for £25 each. The proceeds are going to service charities.

My maths says that's £20,000,000 and if that's correct then it's was well worthwhile to do it........................
