Milsurp After Hours

The planes of the CAF arrived today and were selling rides this afternoon.
Twice I heard the rumble in the distance and ran outside to see the B-29 going
low and slow right over my house. Was way more impressive than just seeing it parked
at the airport. After the second time I realized I didn't have a camera in my hand......Duh.
Made a quick run past the airport on the way to Quiznos and took some pics through the
fence, just at sunset.
Tomorrow or Wed. I will go over and pay the $10 to tour the aircraft and take more photos.
They brought several planes and will get photos of them all.

I have seen 2 up close, 1 at WPAFB and the other at the New England Air Museum in Hartford. They where very impressive engineering marvels for there time.

What a great day I had today. It was almost 70 deg. and not a cloud in the sky.
So I went out to see the CAF planes at the Tucson Airport. Had no idea it would be so close to the runway,
seemed like the air traffic was right next to us, well, the taxiing planes were.
They brought the only flying B-29 "FIFI", and the B-17 "Sentimental Journey", plus a Navy SNJ (or T-6 Texan,
depending on the current paint job) and a C-45 (Beech 18) in RAF paint.
When I got there they had one of the props off of the B-17, said it was leaking, maybe it was leaking prop wash....
Anyway, before I left I got to watch them put the prop back on, very interesting.
While there, 4 F-16s taxied by going to the ANG buildings.
Now, seeing a B-29 from a distance is not that big of a deal, there is one at the Pima Air Museum about 3 miles down the
road and it is parked next to the fence so it is very close to the road. But to crawl inside it is something else,
just wish my wallet said I could go for a ride.
A few years ago they spent $3 million to rebuild the plane and custom order 4 engines, since these planes
original engines were prone to catch on fire and were nicknamed, "Three-engined bombers".
There are about 127 photos and 3 videos (just for you Joe) on the Photobucket site, they got kind of mixed up
when I downloaded them and got out of order, sorry. There are two 30 second videos and one about 4 minutes,
somehow the videos ended up in the middle of the photos.
The longer one shows how close we were to the taxi way and I got in the wrong spot when the C-45 was
returning, as I was watching the SNJ taxiing out.
On the way out of the airport, I spotted what appears to be a wingless Northrop F-5 sitting between
two buildings, nice to have toys I guess.

All in all a great day.
