A Priest, A Lawyer, And an Engineer

An old one, but new to me.
A priest, a lawyer and an engineer had been sentenced to death by guillotine. As each one's turn came, he was asked a simple question. Did he want to be brave and lie on his back to see the blade drop, or lie on his belly to not see it coming.
The priest chose his back, saying that he wanted to be looking at heaven when his time came. He was strapped down, looking up as the blade fell, when it stopped 1/8 inch above his neck. Thinking it must be a sign from God that he should be spared, the priest was released and allowed to go on his way.
The lawyer thought for a minute and decided if it had worked for the priest, maybe it would work for him, too. He was strapped down on his back, and the blade released. It fell to within 1/8 inch of his neck and stopped. Although very confused as to why God would want to spare a lawyer, the executioner released the lawyer.
Now it was the engineers turn. He, too, thought it over and decided that if it had worked for the priest and lawyer, maybe it would work for him also. He was strapped down, looking up, and waiting for the blade to fall. The executioner was just about to release the blade when the engineer suddenly said...
"Oh, wait! I see the problem."
