That is an interesting story. If I'm reading it right the gun was converted from a 12 bore shotgun to a "nitro express" .577 rifle by adding new barrels. Wonder how strong that lock must be? Using smokeless powder that thing must have had a little kick to it. The man that owned it must have had no shortage of courage either to hunt lions closeup with a two shot margin of era. On the the other hand, if the first round didn't hit and the second wasn't a killing shot either, the hunter probably would have been the lion's lunch anyway.
