Either that idiot let go the spoon long before he dropped it, or it's the shortest fuse on
a grenade I ever saw.
And I think it's the former, never could see the spoon fly off...............
Wonder if there was as many holes in them as there was in the rubber boat....

Vern, I remember a firebase called Gettysburg in the Plain of Reeds. I don't think it existed during your tour. It was on the edge of the BoBo Canal. During the day the canal was a swimming hole for whatever platoon was standing down. Even had a makeshift diving board. But at night....guys on guard used to throw in a concussion grenade every so often to discourage sappers swimming over for a visit. When it started to get dark...everybody had to get out of the water before the fireworks started.

We had to cross a fairly deep stream one time, so we shuttled our gear across on air mattresses. We set up on the other side to dry out, and some of us were floating down the stream and got the bright idea to toss some frags to get some fish. You don't have much range when you are throwing while floating on an air mattress. You don't want any part of your body in the water when one of them goes off. It's like getting hit with a hammer.

We never thought it was a good idea to throw a grenade in the water while we were
actually in the water too............
And we thought that concussion grenades would kill more fish than frags, who knows.....

We didn't have concussion grenades, so we couldn't compare them. A lot of fish floated to the surface, though. They tasted muddy as much as fishy. We did a lot of things that it probably wasn't a good idea to do. We used frags to heat water during the monsoons. We did take the fuse out first though. You had to take a bullet apart and dump the powder in where the fuse was, then lit that. It took that to get the comp B explosive in the frag to burn. Then you had a 3 foot plus flame coming out. It looked like a blow torch. You could put six or eight canteen cups in the edge of the flame to heat your coffee water. Like using C-4 to heat water, you only did it during daylight, not when it was dark. It made too much light then.

Now Bob, I never heard of doing that. Wonder who thought that up and discovered he wasn't going to blow himself up at the same time? We used C-4 pretty regularly. We never had heat tabs. It would have been cheaper for the Army if they had given us heat tabs though as I'd imagine plastic explosive was more expensive to make. I never ever saw any heat tabs. The Vietnam supply must have all been confiscated by somebody in the rear before they ever got down to infantry companies.

Anyone remember the Self Heating Cans that came in British rations?

Soups and drinks as I remember and there were warnings not to light the fuse before puncturing the can

They weren't grenades, of course, but they apparently had potential
