Here's a quote from a NRA reprint.... "Target Accuracy with the No.4 Rifle"

By E.G.B. Reynolds....

"Correctly bedded, a No.4 Rifle is capable of CONSISTANT

grouping (inside) 2 minutes of angle at ranges from 200 to 1000 yards., and is far less likely to lose zero than it's predecessor.

What I don't get is how does a bullet, not fully stabilized by the grooves of the barrel, achieve such excellent accuracy?

About the author....

For 14 years Major E.G.B. Reynolds was a Technical Officer

on the Inspectorate of Armaments Headquaters Staff, and

dealt chiefly with the inspection and development or the

Rifles and other small arms.

Major Reynolds was closely connected with the inspection

and development of the No.4 Lee-Enfield rifle since first it

went into production in 1941.

He was a member of 10 British Dewar Trophy teams and was the first person to fire 400x400 in this match.

Can't really say for sure ( definately not an expert ) but anytime I found a spent pill the groove marks are very noticable on it...and maybe stabilization has something to do with the flat base bullet , with a more even pressure pushing from behind , instead of excaping from the sides , slightly , like on a boat tail pill , as it leaves the muzzle . The No.4 also has a freefloating , heavier barrel than the No.1
