This is from a story in the news a hundred years ago today. Note the British contract is said to be for not only guaranteeing payment but... to see that the Russians aren't too picky on inspecting the product.

At the same time, on the same page, is a mention of Winchester. Winchester was making the famous trench gun for the allies...mostly British?.... at the time. And we were "neutral" ,officially, and President Wilson just ordered all American ships armed ...because of those bad German Subs who didn't respect the freedom of the seas for "neutrals". Of course German subs that before allowed crews of ships shipping war supplies to the entente to escape, and often aided to escape, before sinking now had a reason to sink first because the crews were going to be likely armed against them.

Winchester also had the Russians default on a contract they had for 300,000 1895 Muskets in 7.62x54r , but they only where about 10,000 short of full delivery.

I'd forgot about that one. Good point. A good one...and an expensive one... to collect.
