Argentine 1891 Question.....

I've been looking at this 1891 and am a bit confused,
The rifle has the front end similar to the engineers model, but the barrel length is 26". Do you think this was a cut down standard model?

Charles, the link to your Photobucket account does not work. You need to change your hosting site to imgr or Flikr that don't charge anything!
You could also post the image as an attachment direct from your computer.

Here are a couple of scans from Robert Ball's book, Mauser Military Rifles of the world. Not exactly like what you show. Missing the sight ears on yours and the bayonet lug on yours is solid where the one in the photo isn't in the slot.
Archfluffy knows some stuff about South American Mausers. Maybe he will offer an opinion.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
I do think that you are correct in that it has been cut down from the standard model. It looks like a pro job but also a bit wonky for mounting a bayonet. That's the hole for the cleaning rod right below the barrel and above the bayonet lug. So pull the rod to attach the bayo? Also the bayonet would not be well supported with no barrel to hang on to and no additional lugs.
I think it looks like a very nice shortening job but I don;'t think it's original. I could be wrong though.
