1926 on the top and the 1930 that I just aquired on the bottom. Both are in their original 7x57 chambering

The 1926 has the lange vizier type sight like the GEW98 had and the 1930 has the vernier sight.

The stock on the 1930 version has 2 cross bolts that the 1926 doesn't.

You can't see it in this picture but the little floorplate release lever inside the trigger guard has the last 3 digits of the serial number. The bolt in the '26 is mismatched and the one in the '30 is unnumbered.

I think I have found a '95 carbine front band/nose cap, if I do aquire it I will have the '26's barrel cut back to 17" and recrowned.

good looking rifles you have there BR and a carbine project would be interesting.

Nice to see a M1916 Spanish Mauser that hasn't been coverted to the 7.62 Nato round. I can see that the older of your rifles doesn't have a bolt through the stock and the newer one has two bolts. You will notice in my 7.62 conversion has the one bolt under the receiver. Wonder how they decided on this plan and why they thought the stock needed strengthening?

Really good site Brass Rat. Thanks for pointing it out. My M1916 is one of the 2Z series. Haven't found a date on it.

On my wish list is a carbine in 7mm, so I have some questions on these mil surps.

What type of action?

Does the 7.62 conversion upgrade the action to the M98 three lug, gas releace design?

Is it cocked on open or when you close the action?

They are built on the 1893 action.

The 1916's already have the gas port of the left side of the receiver.

I believe that all they did when they converted them to 7.62x51 was setback the barrel, rebore, and cut the chambers.

They cock on closing.

I now have the nosecap for the carbine and an looking for the rear site base, rear site, handguard, and saddle ring. Once I have the sight base and sight I will send off the barrel to be cut, recrowned, front sight reinstalled and have the new rear sight base sweated on. I'll do the wood work myself.

Full power 7x57 out of a 17" barrel ought to be quite a show after dark.

I am trying to think of a tasteful way of marking it when it's finished so it is not mistaken for an original carbine.

I can just picture this post on the Mauser forum in about 2030, "I have come across what looks like a 1916 carbine but the serial number indicates that it should be a short rifle"

Are the M93 actions similar to the M91's... although I don't think the M91's have a gas port. I wondered if all Mausers built after 1898 used the stronger M98 action.

The 1916 is an 1893 action with a few modifications.

1.....The bolt handle is bent

2.....There is a cutout in the left rail to makr clip loading easier.

3.....There is a gas vent in the left side of the receiver ring.

4.....The bolt has a gas vent added.

5.....The barrel is 21 3/4"

1916's were made up until the Spanish civil war and I think that the 93's & 95's were made well into the 20's also.

The 1893's didn't have the gas vent, it may have been added later, I don't know for sure.
