Stacking rods, or hooks, or swivels, went out of business on military arms as they got shorter. A M1 rifle has a stacking swivel but a M1 carbine doesn't. 1903's have them too. M16's don't. Not something I think about but interesting like some feature of evolution that suddenly no longer repeats in a following generation. And it's not like mud and, or, snow went away.

Arch I'd say that thing looks like a hook to slide your wet socks on if you want to dry them over a camp fire. You could tie your line to it if you were fishing for crayfish.

Yes, it can be used for all of the things you have described! But, it is designed to be used as a stacking rod. You are a smart group. The opening pic is of a 96/11 and the following is of three K31s.
