Milsurp After Hours

Never thought I would have an interest in one of these, or any sniper rifle post 1960, but I have several internet buddies that are building M40's I caught the bug and when this rifle came available I just had to jump on it.


The story on these rifles started in 2006 with a desire to build a Vietnam era M40 replica for shooters that was as close to the original as possible.

Fast forward to this past Sunday and while sitting in an Urgent Care with my sick wife I started crusing the web for the components to do an M40 build and stumbling across this rifle for sale. After doing some checking on this rifle latter Sunday I decided to make an offer Monday morning, and was very pleased when the seller accepted it.

The rifle is one of approx. 30 un-numbered M40's that where produced along with the number 1-103 rifles. This rifle is unfired to this point and came in the original box.

Needles to say I am looking forward to some serious range time in the near future.

Finally got some range time with the M40, and after some issues with a loose scope base I got to have some fun.

Needless to say I am pleased with it so far.

1st target is Black Hills 168gr Match @ 100yds 2nd target is Black Hills 168gr Match @ 200yds
3rd target is Black Hills 175gr Match @ 200yds

Looks like Mawhinney custom model has to be for the serious buyer only. $5000 plus $50 for shipping for a genuine just like a Vietnam Marine sniper rifle and scope. Seems like for $5000 he would pay the shipping though. I'd think his profit margin would be such that he could eat that shipping cost just to show his appreciation.

The Army used M14's with special starlight scopes in many cases for optics. The only snipers I ever observed I had little respect for because of a few reasons I won't get into. But...somebody talked them into it. They were mostly just young kids that didn't realize what they were doing or how easy it would be to murder some people that probably weren't the least bit deserving other than being in range at the right time.

One question though Walt - did you move the POA into the bull after the 3 targets you posted?

I was looking for something else researching some 9th Division newspapers. This is a jpg clipping from a 9th Division Newspaper in September of 1968. You can't really tell from the crappy photo what they are shooting but the bottom one looks not unlike a M14 with a starlight scope.

Not yet Duncan, was fighting the clock by the time i got the 3 targets shot. Wife has me house hunting with her, which so far has been good because each one she sees makes her like our present home that much more.

The worst part about buying a new home, after living in one's present home for a lot of years, is when you sign the paperwork and make the commitment you suddenly realize how much stuff you have accumulated that has to be moved. The next place I plan on moving will be the cemetery. In that case at least no personal property will be going along with me.
