As of 2009 and made from 1950 by Remington over 10 million 870's in slightly different purpose built forms have been made. The military, the police, the hunter, the skeet shooter all have slightly dressed versions. Mine is my heavy artillery home defense weapon of choice with buckshot. Mine is a standard Express which is probably the cheapest version.

Here is the other popular 12ga shotgun, Mossberg claims to have sold over 12 million of
their Mossberg 500 line. I have this one for home defense, 8-shot (7+1 using 2 ¾" shells) with the collapsible
stock. Loaded with 00 buck. It does have a scope rail for those long range sniper shots......
Only keep 4+1 in it to protect the spring from compression. I figure if I need more than 5 rounds, it has gone
from home defense to a firefight, then it's time for my 7.62 AR or .308 HK91......
Of course I'm kidding, am just too old for that kind of shit.

My favourite was an Ithica M37 with a 20-inch barrel and a full magazine; when we were allowed such things.

Remington is going bankrupt again and their home plant in Ilion NY is on the block. However, there is some talk of opening that plant up again. And what are they going to produce? Not Bushmaster black guns that got them in a bind over crazy people doing mass murder.
One likely product would be Remington’s Model 870 shotguns, said Jamie Rudwall, a district representative for the union. He said the new owners can rely on a trained workforce to produce shotguns for a hot market.

The FBI reports that it has processed more background checks to purchase or possess a firearm in the first nine months of 2020 than any previous year.

“We certainly have that capability of putting every single person back to work at 870s making literally between 1,200 and 1,800 every day. And every one of them will be sold,” said Rudwall, who once worked at the plant.

Both the 870 and 500 are great guns...

I won a Mossberg 500 in a pistol match about 1993, and I found it to be so homely, it sat in a closet for years. One day I pulled it out to shoot Skeet with, and I found I shot it better than any other shotgun I had. It also has all sorts of different attachments, including rifled slug barrels, and I even have a Muzzleloader barrel for it. Nothing ever broke on it. Because of the Aluminum construction, I could carry it all day without my arms falling off at the end of the day.

When my father moved on to the Eternal Rifle Association, his Remington 870 came to stay with me. It shoots almost as well as the 500, but is much better looking. I do like the steel clatter as the action works. For high volume shooting, the added weight causes me to hurt less at the end of the day.
