He was a test pilot hero for sure but he was famous for saying..."there are bold pilots and there are old pilots. But there are no old bold pilots".

He lived life to the fullest, quite a hero.

He didn't originate that saying, the closest thing he actually said was.......
"If you want to grow old as a pilot, you've got to know when to push it, and when to back off."

E. Hamilton Lee created that quote about old bold pilots, he was a famous early pilot.

I saw the quote on tv... so it must have been so. On the other hand, I trust Niner Delta more as to knowing what he is talking about on the subject and ask for forgiveness.

He certainly may have said it during his lifetime, a very common aviation saying over the years.
And since he is more famous than the originator, it is easy to think he said it, in fact, we want to think he
did say it. This is true of many famous quotes that are attributed to the wrong person.
