Milsurp After Hours

found a Mauser yesterday at a junkshop, which i've passed at least a 100 times, but yesterday i noticed the "Guns" sign. so, naturally I went in. he has milsurp's at amazing price's, amazingly high, that is. anyway, there in a case, was a mauser with straight bolt handle. very little blueing. nice stock, all hardware including stacking swivel. receiver marked Steyr, Austria 1912 and under that was 7.62, just like an Israeli marked K98. no notch for '06 conversion. never seen one, anybody else? considering purchasing, but can't get the ol' codger off the $180 price tag. worth buying or not? unable to get pics, owner was unwilling.

Long rifle or short rifle? There are some pitfalls with the long rifle (sleeved chamber). Either is a good buy for under $200. (around here in Northern VA, anyway) All of the short rifles I have seen were made from the 7mm long rifles, and rebarreled with surplus U.S. 03A3 barrels. If the bore is in good condition and the muzzle is not trashed, it will be a good shooter.
