He almost made it to 100. I wonder if he enjoyed being a public figure all those years or ever wished he could just walk down a street and into a pub and nobody know who he was or expect him to represent a country every waking minute of his life.

Personally, I always thought of him as a lone spirit taking the piss out of the world's WOKE and SNOWFLAKE generations.

Sometimes he was able to relax and have a quiet evening with the boys as he did with the members of the Alvis Car Club of Great Britain of which he was the Patron.

He drove a 12/50 1926 (1928?) 'Beetleback' Alvis roadster and fast; on the sole occasion that I was at a club get together when he attended, he outdistanced his police escort by some minutes.

I've always admired him.

Today is the Navy's day to mourn and remember one of their own who has now 'Crossed the bar'

Gun salutes marking the death of the Duke of Edinburgh are to take place today across the UK, in Gibraltar and at sea.

Saluting batteries will fire 41 rounds at one round every minute from midday in cities including London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, as well as Gibraltar and from Royal Navy warships, the Ministry of Defence said.
