Woman bringing gun to divorce attorney sparks Homewood active shooter panic
A woman turning a shotgun over to her attorney as part of a divorce settlement Friday afternoon sparked a panic over what some thought might be an active shooter in Homewood.
Someone saw the gun, panicked and called 911. According to authorities, the woman walked into an office with the shotgun. The workers in the office saw the gun and ran to the back of the office, calling 911.
The woman placed the shotgun on the counter and left.
The Homewood, Vestavia Hills, and Mountain Brook police departments then responded to a report of an active shooter at the Synovus Center at 800 Shades Creek Parkway. Multiple fire medics staged outside the building, and at least one local hospital was warned to be ready for possible multiple victims.
Employees inside the building were placed in lockdown. Eventually, when police said they found no shooter, no injuries, and no crime committed, employees at the center were told to go home.
Teams of officers did the initial clearance of the building. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is now taking over the scene.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
