Before the end of the rum ration could a sailor trade off his ration to someone else for a coke or tea or something? In Vietnam in 1970, every once in a blue moon I remember when being in the field for a few days at a time we might get a combination of cokes and beer on resupply. I'd trade my share of the cokes for beer. In those days a lot of the really young guys didn't drink and warm beer didn't appeal to them at all.

I am sure that certain deals could be done, not only for Rum but also Blue Liners cigarettes

In the days when tots of rum were issued, it was commonplace for sailors to pledge a portion of their rum ration to another shipmate, possibly to settle a debt. The donor would indicate how much he was allowing the other to take with one of the following phrases: " Wetters" - Allow the rum to tough closed lips. "Sippers" - Take a Sip. "Gulpers" - Take a Gulp. "Sandy Bottoms" - Drink it all.
