Hi doc,

what do you know about the Russian SVT-38/40 rifle.

it's one of the neatest rifles beside a Garand that I've ever seen or had.

I did Boot camp in the marines with the MI and I've picked up one a while back. (NOt CMP)Then I've picked up a very clean SVT-40. It's a very interesting rifle, it's even got a 4 power scope on it. (not russian).

I like pistols and mil. type rifles. I'm trying to reload for it(the SVT-40) But Things aren't right yet.

(I'm an experenced reloader, close to 50years)I started young.

I do have (also) a Russian SKS and the yugo SKS(it's still in cosmoline)plus the assorted mini-14(about 30years old) and Marlin .45LC, Marlin .22mag.(model 57) and other misc. rifles.

Got a good load for an MI or the 7.62x25,39,54R ETC.

Looks like you got a good Automatic collection going. Any chance of telling us more about your SVT40? I've never seen one up close. How does it stack up against the M1 Garand at shooting targets?

Hi Niner,

I haven't had much of a chance to try it(the SVT-40) out against the Garand. That's what I'm trying to see. but the SVT has a scope on it and the garand is just like I it carried it 44 years ago. In other words I can't see the target very good at even fifty yards much less 100.(yea, I'm 64)

I tried the Sellot&bellot ammo in the SVT and I was precening the primers with the SVT. My biggest problem is getting brass for the thing to reload.

I did get my FFL and I'm spending all my time on selling pistols and not getting out to shot much.

I've got the Dillon 550B reloader and I can really crank out the rounds with it. But it's not set up right for the 7.62x54R yet. (needs an adjustment, where? everywhere.)

Actually, if the SVT is in good shape, it's pretty comparable to the Garand in terms of accuracy.

Recoil is similar, though the impulse is transferred differently. The SVT "barks" ouder than the Garand, and exhibits more muzzle blast.

I feel the SVT is a tad more fragile than the Garand, feels quite "long", yet points and balances well.

Of course the Garand has better and more easily adjusted sights.

Czech Silvertip and Albanian shoot well in my SVT's.

I'm not surprised that reloaders have problems with SVT brass as they do tend to ding the cases, plus the fluted chambers can scar them up pretty well.

Here's a pic of the collection-

Hi Pit bull,

Boy, is that an embarresment of riches, Four of them. That's neat.

I've only seen one in the Houston area and I've got it. I paid around $700 for mine.

I believe your right, they might be a little fragile, that's what I heard on the SVT forum. And I don't have a clue where I would get parts from? any idea's?

I've got a scope on mine, It's a four power. I'm now looking for some cheap brass for reloading.

Do you know what the bore of yours mike at? I'm not set up to slug a barrel(I don't know why, I've got almost every thing else for reloading, except a cronograph.)
