Christmas

For a lot of years there would be a fairly big to do about Christmas dinner in my life. Lots of family gathering one place or the other. At my house for a number of years, in even recent times after my children were grown and on their own and didn't have to come...but did, there was a fried turkey as the main attraction, plus lots of things my wife made like pecan pie for desert. Special turkey dressing that took her a long time to make. Rice and gravy and cranberry sauce and dinner rolls. Special vegetable dishes that often others would bring with all sorts of embellishments like fetta cheese in spinach casserole or sliced almonds and fresh green beans swimming in various sauces. However.. times have changed.

This year with no family around except my daughter we will make the best of it with a couple of ribeye steaks on the grill and baked potatoes and some vegetables my daughter will bring.

In today's hundred year old newspaper story out of Washington DC I spied this "simple" meal for Christmas day to give the family wives a break. Of course the following Sunday they were expected to put on the full court press with Turkey and all sorts of fancy stuff. But.. reading this newspaper suggestion made me feel that maybe things haven't changed as much over the last hundred years on the home front.
