I'm buying one of these, a reproduction, in excellent condition.

Anyone know what price they bring 2nd hand?

I'm committed to the purchase and think that I'm not getting a bad deal, just wonder what they are bringing in not so inflated parts of the world.

The Permit to Purchase arrived spot on the calculated time of postal time and the mandatory 28 day cooling off period. No undue holdups, which is good.

I shoot a Navy Arms repro Smith in N-SSA competition. (www.n-ssa.org). Second hand over here seem to run anywhere from $300 to $400 US for one already sighted in. Can't tell from the photo whether or not the front sight has been replaced or not. If not, you will need a taller front sight to zero it in. These are readily available from most sutlers over here for about $5 US. It's dovetailed in so there's no problem replacing it. OR you can solder on some brass sheeting to make it longer. Either way, go to the range and don't forget to take along a file and a soft punch. You'll need them. The punch for windage adjustment and the file for elevation. For 100 yards, slip a small 1/8" thick washer under the sight while its in the down position. That should do it.

Over here, we use nylon cartridge cases rather than the more expensive brass ones. You can expect about 30 to 50 shots before they need to be replaced. The nylon ones run about $25 per hundred US. Most of us cast our own bullets. I use the Rapine Smith/Spencer bullet lubed and sized to .514. Also, I use 1/4" Avery Dots, available at stationery stores, to cover the touch hole on each cartridge. It keeps the powder from leaking out and moisture from leaking in. The fire from a musket cap will blow right through the dot, or you can prick a hole with a small straight pin.

Now, a word of caution IF yours is made by Pietta for Navy Arms. Some years back, a bunch made for reenactors, and not for accurate shooting, entered the market. These had the barrel blanks reversed, making the bore at the muzzle .002" to .004" larger than the breech end. I would recommend you slug the barrel from BOTH ends just to make sure you have a shooter. Over here, Navy replaces the barrel when one of these show up. Don't know what they'd do in your case if needed. This is a rarity today, but it is still a possibility. Only other bad habit I've heard of are some reports of the cleanout screw being blown out due to improper threading. Never had a problem myself and never actually saw it happen to anyone else. Just reports of it happening.

Smiths are fun to shoot. I use 20 gr. of Goex fffg and 6 cc of cornmeal filler in each cartridge. Good luck with it.

I had to know So I made the time. Bore is parallel, and maybe .001" bigger at the chamber end. I measured using a Dial Caliper; Which to us old Metrologists is a bit like using an adjustable spanner.
