Milsurp After Hours

There seems to be a glut of them on the market now. These receivers were the ones first used on the Model 91/30's before being replaced by the more commonly found round receivers. I wonder how many of the early Hex receiver 91/30's were made of the total production of something like 17 million between 1930 and 1944?

I don't have one, so I ordered one today. Very good condtion for $75 with the bayonet, sling, oil bottle, etc. I almost ordered two for $5 less each, but.... didn't.

Is it one of the newish re-furbs from SOG or AIM ?

Ordered it from SOG, although Century has them too and no telling who else.

It is a 1935 and made by Tula judging by the star with arrow in it on the receiver. The numbers on the bolt and receiver match with no line outs and renumbering. However much of the furniture is marked with the triangle with arrow Izhevsk. Overall condition is very good as advertised.

The bore is excellent. And the sling is new as well as the ammo pouches and oil can, bayonet, and cleaning tools. No cosmo. Looks like the metal may have been refinished at some time. It does have the cleaning rod as well.

One strange thing are a couple of demples in the wood on either side of the rifle just behind the rear barrel band. Anybody have a guess what would be the purpose or how this might have come about?

Oh, one other thing... it has that big Century import stamp on the hex receiver to detract from the look of it.

Those dents are for easier barrel band removal.

let's see the whole thing I've been looking at the ad's and a hex might be on the list but it sounds good so far

www.mosinnagant.net then to the Soviet area to the Last Dragoon Rifle you can see a breakdown by year in production. The round receiver came into production in 1937 so use that as a guide. Recall however production numbers mean little in some regards due to the losses the Soviets took in WW2.

I guess I hadn't realized that the cut out places on both sides of the stock were common, as I see in your pictures. I only have two other 91/30's and both are round receiver and don't have the notches cut out.

Here's a 91/30 that was a Finn capture. They even put a finger groove splice in the stock at the location of the back barrel band.

Haven't had a chance to take a picture of it outside in the sun light, but it looks really pretty good. Here is a picture that's not too good, but of the rifle.
