Colleagues: every now & then I see a SMLE #1 converted to .22 trainer @ the local gun shows. Such #1s always catch my eye, but I have no idea as to exactly what I’m looking @ or should be looking for.

Can anyone recommend a book that discusses theses rifles & what I should look for while contemplating a possible purchase?

Welcome aboard Ray,

One thing to look for in particular is rings in the bore. The older rifles were often used, in the services, with ammo that, to put it politely, left a lot to be desired. It was not unknown for a bullet to not get all the way through the barrel and for another to be fired up its tail. Hence the ring. Usually doesn't seem to affect accuraccy, but better if it's not there. The only other thing to watch for is burrs from the firing pin on the edge of the chamber caused through dry firing.

But have a good read up first as there are variations around and some of the rarer ones turn up from time to time.

Eoin.

That's OK Adam.

The pay rate is, I take it, the usual 3/5ths of 1/6th of FA?
