Does somebody know what tools are needed to recut flat-top checkering and where to buy them?

Is this kind of checkering tricky compared to pointed checkering? Any advice?

Huh?

Does that give you a clue as to how much help I'm going to be?

Flat-top checkering has the top of its diamonds cut flush with the stock in contrast to pointed diamonds in conventional pointed checkering.

Furthermore, the grooves in flat-top checkering are cut in an "U" shape instead of an "V" shape on conventional checkering.

Flat-top checkering was used in period guns, now disused because it wears fast.

Does the above help?

It might help someone, but in all honesty any kind of checkering or engraving is waaaaay above me! Hopefully one of our smart guys will jump in.

The only way that I know is to make a single cutter tool and re-cut VERY carefully line by line. Because flat-top was before the days of standard spacing (and even now except with comercial tools there is no standard) a double line tool would need to be made to suit the individual gun.

I would measure the width of the grooves and file a cutter accordingly.

Hope this helps.

Eoin.

Thank you!

Just one more question, what the design of that tool should be?
