New US M1917 bayonet

When I bought my Parker Hale .577 the chap I bought it from gave me this bayonet. He used to have a M1917 but sold it some time ago. He had previously offered to sell it to me for £12 but threw it in free with the rifle. It came in an Australian SMLE scabbard but I am not complaining as the price was right.

really want an American scabbard to go with that bayonet, IMA
http://ima-usa.com/ has them, but at US$20, + postage & packing.

if you look closely , its actualy the pattern 13 bayo [1913] dated in october of 1917 , its a remington , and it looks like one of the late ones the US took over-remarked for use with the m1917 rifles , very nice pick up , i had one i let go with a rifle and wish i had it back -isnt that always the way ?

these are mine , should see my remington m1917 with later scabord , and winchester m1917 with early scabord [dont have the plastic one yet - and sold my viet nam era m1917 bayo and scabord] finaly remington p1913 with scabord and frog

i suspect the p13 would be more correct with an early teardrop stud scabord - yes ?

Attention PeterN2, your bayonet is not for an US M1917 rifle but for the british P14 then you dont need an US scabbard with the 1910 hook. It's quite easy to detect these bayonets, the ones for the P14 bears the double date: 1913 for the model and 1917 for manifacturing whil US Armi ones bears only manifacturing date. In shortage of P14 bayonets and scabbards americans diverted a lot of their USM1917 material to brits and for it you can see in England a lot of M1917 US bayonets using the US tipe scabbard with the hook plus a brit frog as the one in this thread. The say they come from some Guard unit. I bought one for my 1917 US cartridge belt selling the frog to some Brit stuff collector.

My P14 bayonet lacks the US stamping!

In effect your bayonet was a british P13 one diverted to the US Army as others from the contract of September 1917. They did cancel british acceptance markings and added the big US. God knows how it did arrive in England.
The pic below is from the big US bayonet guru Gary Cunningham who is pointing out also "Why the British proof was used is not known as the British inspectors were no longer at the plant".Try to see if are still visible british markings under the peening of your bayonet.

It probably came as lend lease when we were stiffed for all your old junk (Honestly thanks). My Bayo lacks the US stamping as it is a P14 model. P13 never achieved full production and true examples are really rare. The stock odf remaining riilfes and bayonets that would have been left behind after the UK contract was filled and the UK inspectors left would be restamped if passing inspection. The 1913 date stamp in a line is atandard for all P14 Bayonets in my experience together with a manufactors roundel with name inside and actual month and year of production below the 1913.
Inspection stamps occurr on the obverse and tend to be Broad Arrow and Crown with initials below!
