The chap I bought my PH 1858 Enfield from also has a G98 Mauser that he may sell. It is a 1914 Amberg. It has seen some use as it is not in the best of condition, but I suppose it went through WW1 after all. The action has lost most of its blue and is quite bright. It shoots OK though, as I once had a go with it at 500 yards. I have not seen one of these for sale recently in the UK and was wondering what is a reasonable price for one is these days.

Do the numbers match? Is the stock original? Condition is everything. You said there was some blueing wear. Decent G98's go from $300.00 on up, here in NY. If the bore is nice, and the stock is original and unsanded, and the numbers match, $400.00 - $500.00 would not be uncommon.

The receiver and bolt were originaly in the white on WWI Gewehr 98s, so hopefully there isn't any blue on the action because if there is it was put on there later.
As stgeorgeNY said, condition is everything.
Thanks for the info

I will keep my eye on it and when he wants to sell it, I will make him an offer. It would be nice to have a WW1 Mauser.

Peter.

Another rifle I have my eye on is at a shop not far from me.It is described as a FN Mauser in .22RF. It looks like the 1924 model but Small Arms of the World does not mention a .22 version. I will have to go and have a look. Does £295 sound like a ball park figure for a .22 Mauser described as good condition?

It's been ages since I have done the not so EZ board thing.
Anyhow it's been ages since I have been here as well.
To cut to the quick - Peter , did you get that 1914 Amberg ?.
Amberg had a decent year of production in 1914. I am aware of four 14 dated Amberg rifles. The one I have is all matched but the bolt , and is unit marked on the disc to the 13th Bavarian Inf Regt. I also have a bolt only mismatch 1913 Amberg marked to the 68th Inf Regt ( prussian ).
So do let us know if you brought it home .

The chap who has it has not let it go yet. A Long Lee is the first rifle I am trying to get him to sell me. No luck yet.

Peter.
