Milsurp After Hours

I had a look round the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington yesterday. Not a bad collection of aircraft to look at. The control tower is set up as it would be in WW2 with the blackboard marked up with which aicraft are out and when they are due to return. The hanger is a bit cramped so it is difficult to take pictures of the aircraft in there. A few pics.

I didn't know the Tornado was a museum piece already. They have two of them.

Some new aircraft there since my last visit Peter, I must have missed the collection of gun turrets too, that looks like an excellent display.

The glider under reconstuction looks like the American Waco if im not mistaken.

I saw the Victor doing a fast taxi a few years ago at an airshow there, unfortunately it isnt allowed to fly.

The Victor is still maintained in a taxiable condition. It is a pity it can't be allowed to fly. We have the Vulcan to look forward to as that is going to fly again. I only wish we had a Lightning flying in the UK. There are a few flying in South Africa but we need one flying in the UK. I once saw six of them doing the rotation take off where they lift off the runway, stay low and then go vertical at the end of the runway. Very noisy and a sight to see. A chap I was in the RAF with saw a full squadron of twelve Lighnings do the same thing. That, I would have liked to have seen. Did I say that the Lighting is my favourite aircraft? The Vulcan is a close second.

Since I viseted The Imperial War Museum nearly British Museum or so I have seen in internet that you have so splendid museums there that I can only wach with envy.

I would agree. Only problem is far too many to visit all of them in a limited time.

However I would say seeing this alone was worth missing any museum you could name.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster, one of only two flying today. The other is in Canada.

why is The Victor not allowed to fly looks very capable?

those old planes are something else thanks for the look.

It probably does not have the right piece of paperwork from the licencing people. To get that and insurance would likely need Bill Gates income to service. The Yorkshire Air Museum is run by volunteers so not much money to spare.
