Ah spring is near... The Spitfire is out and about!

Post by Brithunter » Wed Apr 19, 2006 3:15 am

Hi All,

On Monday and on Friday 7th April I have seen one of the Spitfires from the Battle of Britian flight up doing some areobatics. They are probably giving it a shake down before the coming display season. Have not seen the Lancaster about as yet but it won't be long before she is up and about in the skies over us

Seeing more of the new Typhoons' as well. So perhaps living in Lincolnshire has some benefits after all ;)

Always great to watch (and hear) something like that. I watched a Stearman do climb and stalls last Friday. Great.

The Spitfire will be forever the first thing that comes to mind when the battle of Britain is mentioned but these http://www.raf.mod.uk/bob1940/hurricane.html were the real workhorses of the RAF at the time.

They weren't the fastest or the most maneuverable but they got the job done when they were asked to.

This is my vote for the most under rated and under recognised aircraft of the war.

Rommel wasn't all that crazy about the Desert Air Force hurricanes either.

@ Curtis. The MkIIc Hurricane used by the Desert Airforce was armed with four 20mm cannon, i took this photo at the Flying Legends airshow a few years back. Alongside in night fighter camouflage is another Hurricane, although they were`nt a great success in that role.

@ Brithunter, I will be spending a long weekend in Coningsby later in the year and will be visiting the BBMF and also East Kirkby.

Ahhh,

Well now did you perchance visit the Red Lion in East Kirkby? the old table that was there during WW2 was is still in the Public bar complete with aircrew names carved in the top. Let me know when your here and i will try and meet up with you. Sorry no bike I stopped riding a few years back when the knees got too painfull. It might be better now after they operated on them a few years back.

Have not seen the Hurricane about this year yet :( nor the Lanc. Today we had flights of F-15's going over low and I mean low enough to read the two big letters on the twin tails LN is what was on them. No Typhoons seen today. I have visted the East Kirkby centre some years back but I myself have only moved up here last June although my parents have been here over 20 years and I walk the dogs on the sea Wall down by RAF Wainfleet control tower. If Landmark get their act sorted out we will shooting on the RAF ranges at Beckingham, last shoot was October last year

@ brithunter. I have`nt been to the Red Lion, but we are staying in the White Bull Inn, Coningsby on the 21st/22nd July. Saturday 22nd, we are at East Kirkby airfield all day, and Sunday we will visit the BBMF before heading home.

It would be nice to meet up over the weekend sometime if you can make it.

MkIIc Hurricanes with 4 20mm cannon were also used by Soviets at Finnish front.
