This is a Smith&Wesson .38 M&P (Military & Police) that came from my grandfather who was in the Revenue Cutter Service before and during WW1. (probably not connected to his service) The only information I have is it is probably a Model 1905, 3rd Change. What I do know is it has a 4" barrel, fixed rear sight and is nickel plated (plating is very good).

The serial number seems to fall very early in the run, 86th out of 94,803 made. The run went from 146900 to 241703, and mine is 146986.

If anyone could tell me more about it, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Vern.

I don't think it's a 1905 3rd change....looks more like the preceeding model.

The 3rd change had the square butt, the model in the photo sports the round butt.

The Standard book of firearms shows serial number ranges for various editions of these S&W pistols and the serial number range suggests that Vern is in the right number range for what he thinks it is.
