Gent's please educate me on Webley revolvers.

What models were made prrior to 1899? Are these guns dated?

Not an expert by a long shot, but I find reference to a Model 1872 royal Irish Constabulary revolver in .450, and 1880 police , 1878 Webley-Pryse in .455 and .476., Model 1883 R.I.C., 1884 R.I.C. Naval, Britsh Bulldog made 1878 to 1914, 1878 Army Express, Webley Kaufmann Model 1880, Webley Green, model 1882.

The Mark I was made 1887 to 1894.

The Mark II 1894 to 1897.

Mark III 1897.

Mark IV about the same time and following the Mark III.

Are the Mk I, II, and III dated? I need to clearly establish manufacture before 1899.

my mkI , mkII , mkIII , are not dated as the later pieces are , they have clear mk-designations , and all three were purchased thru reputable sources as "antique" in the US market if that is your concern , there is a possibility of getting close based on serial numbers if you can convince someone smarter than i in this area to help with the analysis if this is what your looking for , i think i recall some discusion of dates being associated with issue markings but i may be wrong on that

not sure when mkIII production stopped , but i believe they refer to the mkIV as the boer war model and production was from 99-13 or so , this would be the first one to be concerned with for antique status in the US ,

I gotta be able to convince ATF&E that the gun was made prior to 1899. I understand there may be serial number list forthcoming.

The cutoff date for antiques here in Canada is 1898, the year after P.Webley and Son amalgmated with Richard Ellis & Son, and W&C Scott & Sons to become The Webley and Scott Revolver & Arms Company Ltd. They changed the name engraved on the barrel rib or top strap. So here it is easy, if it says P.Webley on it, it is an antique! If it says Webley and Scott chances are it isn't.

Many models were made overlapping each other, so not many maodels are definitivly made before 1899. They introduced the Mk.IV in 1899 but made it for years. You would have to prove production date by serial number.

Webley only put the date on arms manufactured for miltiary contracts, I believe, and not until after the turn of the century, I think around WWI.

i think you might be able to find a data source if you can get one of the well versed here to set their mind to it , quite a lot of knowledge here , meanwhile i can finaly post mine , the 455s[some cut to 45]

There is achap called Richard Milner who for a fee will research your Webly as he has the Webly production "Day" books and from these can tell when it was made. Not all the records were saved but it seems most were. I will try to get his contact details later today from a member of the HBSA council.
