Milsurp After Hours

Hello all

Last week I bought myself an all matching Mosin Nagant PU sniper.

The rifle is all matching alright, but the PU scope looks a bit to new to me.

I haven’t had time to take pictures of the rifle itself, but here’s a picture of the serial number on the PU scope and a picture of a 2nd number on the left side of the receiver.

I know that some PU scope manufacturers used serial numbers where the 1st two digits are the year of production.

I don’t think that is the case with my scope because it looks way to new.

I also read somewhere that the number found on the left side of the receiver is the number of the matching PU scope that was issued to this rifle.

What about the "butterfly stamp" with the numbers "72" next to it just above the last 2 digits of the 2nd serial number?????

I’d sure like to know what I have.

My guess would be one of the new Ukrainian repros as they are all over the market right now. Some want to call these Russian repros but they are not coming out of Russia – at least not those in the USA. These are being made on the same machinery as used in the war years and are decent copies overall. A lot of outlets are selling these in the USA at the moment and as I understand it common in Germany as well. SSME Deutche Waffen, Coles, IO, and others here in the USA are selling these at the moment. All the rifles are being made for export. Those making these are rather open and honest about this fact now. At first the sellers overseas were calling these snipers - stating made postwar in reworks. Now they admit that was not fact.

When I make some more pictures of the rifle and scope, could you take a look at them and give me your opinion please.

Hello Martin,

This "butterfly" is "angel of death", as I call it, an older version of our beloved german proofe eagle

Same stamp is on my swiss G96/11.

72 stand for 1972, the year this rifle was proffe fired here in germany.

Ther shold be anotzer stamp, to identify the proofe house too.

If the rifle is in original sniper configuratuon, it came that way and for real.

Back in 1972 nobody was interested in faking PU Snipers

The scope looks real new, but even that could be right.

I got a PU with mount in a trade, with also looked brand new made.

But the fellow I got it from had it in his posession way befor the fall of the berlin wall, and he lived behind that wall, as did I

Thanks very much for the info.

The German proof stamp on my rifle are in fact 3 stamps.

The angel, the number 72 and then something that looks like a branch with leaves on it.

I'll take another look at it when I'm home tonight and take a picture of it.

The rifle looks original to me, I only had doubts about the scope and mount.

I'd sure like some more detailed info on the proof if you have it.

The mount, like the rifle, has the Ishevsk stamp on it.

The "branch" is the stamp of the proofehouse of Ulm, it is a antler, zu gut Deutsch eine Geweihstange

If the reciever is highwall and the holes plus cutouts in the stock look old, you have a real PU sniper

Just post some more pics of the gun/mount/scope.

Is the mount stamped?

You might ask on the Gunboards sniper forum as there are a lot of experts there. I am not one of these as snipers are not my thing. I am sure someone there could tell you for sure.

I just arrived home(it's 22.00 hours) so no pictures tonight.

I will take some asap though.

I did check the rifle.

The receiver is high wall and the holes and cut outs do look old to me(no sharp edges).

I'll get back to you on this one.

Yes, the mount is stamped.

It has the Ishevsk stamp(arrow in triangle) and a 5 in a diamond on it.

I'll check the gunboards sniper forum for this.
