Combat Engineer ? Not quite, but I spent four years in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee working road construction as a surveyor. I spent two tours in Viet Nam, one tour on a paveing crew doing Route 9 west from Dong Ha towards the 'Rockpile' and Khe Sanh. I hate the smell of asphalt !
